SUMMARY

Josephine Baker: world-renowned performer, champion of Civil Rights in the United States, international spy, member of the French Résistance. Baker’s contributions to both French and American history are manifold. She embodied the spirit of our two nations and represented the best of our two cultures.

In 2021, Josephine Baker was interred in the Panthéon as a French hero, the first Black woman to receive the honor. On this occasion, President Macron stated, “Josephine Baker, you enter the Pantheon because while you were born American, deep down there was no one more French than you."
