Burma (Myanmar) – France condemns the air strike on the village of Pa Zi Gyi in the strongest terms (Apr. 11, 2023)

France condemns in the strongest possible terms yesterday’s horrific air strike by Burmese forces on the village of Pa Zi Gyi, Burma, which left several dozen dead and injured, including children. This latest massacre of civilians is consistent with the Burmese junta’s strategy, for more than two years now, of indiscriminate violence against the Burmese people, who reject its illegitimate power grab. France offers its condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones.

France will continue to stand firmly with the Burmese people, whose courage and staunch commitment to democracy we applaud.

Armenia / Azerbaijan – Border clashes (Apr. 12, 2023)

France expresses its deep concern over the border clashes on April 11 between Armenia and Azerbaijan near the village of Tegh, in Armenian territory, which left seven people dead and several injured on both sides.

We reiterate that the delineation of the border must be achieved exclusively through negotiations, and we urge the Parties to continue their efforts to that end. Armenia’s territorial integrity must be respected and Azerbaijani forces occupying positions on the Armenian side of the line of contact must withdraw in order to prevent future incidents and preserve the foundations of a lasting peace in the region.

France fully supports the efforts by EUMA, the EU observer mission in Armenia deployed on the Armenian side of the border, to which we contribute, and which plays a central role in lowering tensions. We will continue to work alongside the EU to ensure respect for the ceasefire, dialogue, and the continuation of negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Russia – Execution of a Ukrainian prisoner of war (Apr. 12, 2023)

France was horrified to learn of a video showing the decapitation of a presumed Ukrainian prisoner of war by Russian armed forces in Ukraine. It condemns this barbaric act in the strongest possible terms – it is a clear violation of international humanitarian law as well as an indefensible attack on human dignity.

Those responsible for all the crimes committed in Ukraine must be held accountable. France offers, and will continue to offer, its unwavering support to Ukrainian courts and international tribunals in their vital efforts to combat impunity. There will be no peace without justice.
