Bolivia
Political situation (June 26, 2024)

France condemns the attempted attack on democracy in Bolivia yesterday and urges respect of the constitutional order.

France expresses its support for the Bolivian government and assures the Bolivian people of its solidarity.

Our Embassy and the Crisis and Support Center of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs have been mobilized and French nationals have been advised to exercise caution.

Alain Berset elected Secretary General of the Council of Europe (June 25, 2024)

France warmly congratulates Alain Berset on his election as Secretary General of the Council of Europe following the vote by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on June 25.

The Council of Europe, the oldest European intergovernmental organization, plays a crucial role in defending and promoting the rule of law and human rights in its 46 member states. The regulations it develops, including the Istanbul Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, and the Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, are benchmark documents.

The Secretary General can count on the support of France, the organization’s host country, in fulfilling his mandate.



International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (June 26, 2024)

On this International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, France reaffirms its commitment to combat this inhumane practice and expresses its solidarity with the victims and their loved ones. France commends the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the Council of Europe, international and regional organizations, civil society organizations and human rights defenders for their efforts in this regard.

France will never stop supporting the victims and their loved ones. It financially supports the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture and applauds its work.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the UN’s adoption of the International Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. This convention was signed and ratified by 174 countries, the vast majority of UN member states. As it pledged on December 10, 2023, during the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, France supports the universalization and implementation of the Convention and its Optional Protocol.
