Situation in Gaza (July 10, 2024)

France is deeply troubled by reports concerning several Israeli strikes against schools sheltering displaced persons in Gaza, including an UNRWA-run school and a school connected with the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Yesterday’s strike against the al-Awda school, which left several dead, is the third such strike targeting a school harboring displaced persons since last Saturday. We call for a full investigation into these strikes.

Targeting schools is unacceptable, especially those sheltering civilians displaced by the fighting. We call on Israel to do everything in its power to protect civilians as it conducts military operations and to fully abide by international humanitarian law, particularly the principles of proportionality and distinction.

In light of the absolute humanitarian emergency in Gaza, France calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, which alone can protect civilian populations; the release of the hostages; and a massive influx of humanitarian aid through all Gaza Strip crossing points.
