Veteran’s Day at the First World War Memorial

SUMMARY

Today, November 11, 2024, the Embassy of France participated in a ceremony at the First World War Memorial in Washington, DC to commemorate the Armistice of 1918. General François Lecointre, Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, was present, and participants heard from Terry Hamby, Chairman of the National WWI Centennial Commission, and descendants of the "Hello Girls."
The "Hello Girls" were American women who served during WWI as telegraph operators in Paris and across France and England. Their dedication to their country and commitment to finding a way to serve was long forgotten by history.
