Iran – France deplores the announcement of additional death sentences in response to the protests (Jan. 9, 2023)

France deplores the announcement of additional death sentences handed down by Iranian courts following the outrageous executions of two protesters on January 7. France has denounced these sentences and executions repeatedly, publicly and directly with the Iranian authorities. So have its EU partners, which adopted sanctions against those responsible for the violent crackdown in Iran, in violation of that country’s international human rights commitments.

France reaffirms its unwavering opposition to the death penalty everywhere and in all circumstances, and its commitment to the universal abolition of this unjust, inhumane punishment. We repeat that the death sentences and executions targeting participants in demonstrations, in addition to the Iranian authorities’ many other serious and unacceptable violations of fundamental rights and freedoms, cannot be a response to the Iranian people’s legitimate aspirations for freedom.

France welcomes the release of 46 Ivorian soldiers on January 7. They had been held in Mali since July 10, 2022.

We applaud the efforts by ECOWAS and Togo to broker a dialogue, which led to this positive outcome.
